So there is a restaurant in Prishtina called “Commandante Marcos”, and it had really good Mexican food. Surprisingly so. Was it the best Mexican food I ever had? No; but I have spent some time in Mexico and tasted a lot of the real deal, so it is an unfair comparison.

Still, it was good. The restaurant is right outside of the “Film City” base and easy to get to for regular visitors. A bunch of us from the Intel side of things (our Aviation Battalion and the Brigade we worked for) went there one day and had dinner.

And, yes, it really did feel like “flavor” had been rediscovered. And this wasn’t just “add some salt and hot sauce”, no, there was actual seasoning in the well-cooked meat, tortillas had real texture (corn tortillas, too), and the guacamole was either made with real avocados or there was a secret awesome canned variety I had not heard of.

It was a really nice break from the food at the chow hall, which had long since become a dreary conveyer belt of the same near-tasteless offerings which were probably nutritious enough, but certainly dull.

If you’re ever in Pristina (Yeah, I know, you’re packing your bags for Kosovo as you read this) give it a shot.
