Naturally we were all concerned about going into Iraq. We felt ready, but there’s always that air of uncertainty. Anyhow– before every convoy anywhere, we have a convoy briefing. We lay out safety procedures, who the convoy commander is, what to do if attacked, where to meet if separated, how medical issues will be handled en route, and so on. And we had –by this point– immersed ourselves in pop-culture action movies so I am sure that many of us had action-movie thoughts about what was to come. And seriously, nothing was more appropriate than Mad Max… or specifically, “The Road Warrior“. I swear if some of us could have gotten sharpened boomerangs and howdah pistols, we would have.
