Remember, Veteran’s Day is for veterans still alive. Memorial Day –today– is for those who are no longer among us.
Joe spends a bit of time remembering a fallen comrade. Later, though, he’ll go on to a barbecue and have a good time, because that’s what the deceased probably would have done. Memorial Day is one of the more somber holidays, but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the idea of wishing someone a “Happy” Memorial Day. You want to remember the good times that person brought into your life, rather than just dwell on the loss.
