Remember that Joe and Juni adopted a former Military Working Dog– one Sadie, a fellow Iraq veteran. She is also a crafty canine and can run a mean game of “Dungeons & Dragons: Canine Edition”.

The classic painting that Sadie looks at is a copy of a 1903 painting titled “A Friend In Need”. It is one of a series of unconnected paintings that are collectively known as “Dogs Playing Poker”. The first painting was done in 1894, the last series of paintings in 1910. All involve anthropomorphized dogs playing card games. There is a copy of this painting hanging up in the kennel where I leave my dogs when I go on vacation, and the series of paintings is well known.

It has also sparked a more modern version, called “Dogs Playing Dungeons & Dragons”, and it seems to me that Sadie would be a great Dungeon Master. That led me to think of “Dungeons & Dragons: Canine Edition”… which led me to contemplate that a Roomba would essentially be a “zombie vacuum cleaner”. Time to roll initiative, doggos.

Anyhow, I’m back from my brief hiatus and I’ll do a few brief comics of Sadie for awhile. If you’re wondering why Joe and Juni are at Annual Training in the Fall, bear in mind that this is supposed to be happening while Nikki Donner is at Basic Training over the summer. I don’t adhere too strictly to timelines so things sometimes jump around a bit. The kennel that Sadie is portrayed in didn’t exist in 2008, but it’s one of the anachronisms I sometimes finesse for the sake of the story.
