We had a lot of recon missions looking for “illegal logging” in the hills and mountains of the Kosovo ABL (Administrative Boundary Line– Kosovo and Serbia don’t have a “border” because that would imply that Kosovo is an independent state, which Serbia and some other countries don’t recognize).
It was fun to go up in the helicopter and look around, sure, but it was also kind of, well… a bit silly. If I see someone cutting down a tree, how am I supposed to know if they are doing it “legally” or not?
I mean, at this point, everyone knows that if you put on an orange reflective safety vest and a hardhat, people automatically assume you are doing something “official” and leave you alone, right?
At least I got to learn how to ask “What?” in Albanian.
And besides, any chance for a helicopter ride, IMO.
