There is (supposedly) an “ancient Chinese curse” that says, “May you live in interesting times”.
My college history professor always said that you can tell when a country has become successful, because its history becomes boring. On the other hand, it sometimes feels like we’re currently living through what will be the hard part of someone’s 2065 history test.
As I write this, all these things mentioned are happening: there are protests against the Serbian government in the wake of the Novi Sad railway canopy collapse; the government of Kosovo recently had an election and can’t form a coalition in Parliament; and the Bosnia-Herzegovina Federation with the Republika Srpska looks like it is heading towards a messy break-up.
Who knows, maybe by the time this comic posts, some or all of these things may have resolved themselves. The Balkans, at least, may be quiet. Notice I haven’t mentioned anything else going on elsewhere in the world– a strategic choice on my part.
I don’t know about you, but I am ready for some dull, boring times.
