I don’t have kids of my own, but most of the people in my life, near and far, do –or are planning them. One thing about the parenting role that seems so daunting is that you never know what you might say to a kid that really, really sticks with them.

A parent may try to give sage advice and pass on lessons that they think are important, but instead it is some offhand comment made without thought that really bores down deep into the kid’s sense of inner self and *that* is what they carry with them, even after all the attempts at philosophizing or moralizing have been forgotten.

Joe is one of those parents who is always mindful of “that moment”, when he expects his daughter Josephina to suddenly turn to him and ask him about the meaning of life, or where do people come from or where do they go when they die, or some other deep thing that opens the door for imparted wisdom…

…only to find that what’s really on her mind is what goes on inside the dog’s nose.

Have a good summer out there.
