We were sent to a place called Taji Air Force Base for the exact reason stated above– old Iraqi Air Force bombs were abandoned, and insurgents were using them to make IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices– roadside bombs). And, yeah, we were to take them from Taji to a desert site near Tikrit, which was Saddam Hussein’s home town and the seat of his most loyal extended clan. The whole area was full of Sunni militias, hence “Sunni triangle”.
Not that, you know, that would have any bearing ten years later, of course…
