8 July:
Oh, Sergeant Skeeves, you’re going to get in so much trouble…
Female SAW (Squad Automatic Weapon) gunners are rare, but they’re out there. The SAW is heavier than the M-16, of course, and carrying it for long periods of time can be taxing. But if she can do it, she can volunteer for the duty. The thing is, if a female volunteers for a job, and gets assigned to it, anyone who insults her ability to carry out that job not only insults her personally, but by implication is also insulting her entire chain of command, who agreed that she was the best person for the job… or at least deserved a chance to try it.
And besides, a lot of times it turns out that women who devote themselves to marksmanship turn out to be quite good at it. Something about having more patience… although it looks like our gunner here is just about out of it.
