“First” does seem to imply a “Last”, doesn’t it?

As Private O’Neill tries to remember the people she’s met in the unit, and place them in context, she brings up an interesting point.

In every unit there’s That Guy (or Gal)– the guy that doesn’t do proper hygiene, is always a couple tacos short of a full combo plate, and no one likes to be around. He (or she) may not even be particularly problematic or toxic by themselves, but their lack of cleanliness and social graces means no one misses them when they’re not there.

It is rare but sometimes these people rise in the ranks. It makes you wonder, “what happened?” In the military it is common to make judgments about a person’s appearance– not if they have, say, a big nose or something, but their overall bearing, cleanliness, posture, and so on. At some point these people had to have it all together, and then they decided to just… let it go.

To become… the Last Sergeant.
