Sometimes you never know how a word will be (mis)interpreted. I always associated the word “handtruck” or “handcart” with a device to assist with carrying heavy loads, and a “dolly” was an alternate word for “doll” for very young children.

There are a lot of words like this– things like “soda” or “pop”, for example (and sometimes the brand name “Coke” is used as a catch-all term in a few places). In some parts of the Midwest, “casserole” becomes “hot dish”.

We recently had a safety class and the presenter used the term “dolly” to refer to a load-carrying handtruck, but me being me my mind immediately went down this rabbit hole instead because it is much more entertaining.

The troops are getting ready for KFOR deployment! During the weekend we had these presentations, classes, and lectures, we also had to pack our “C-bags” for stuff that won’t be available until we reach Kosovo. We also had to pack our “shop boxes” for things that we would need at Ft. Cavasos (which will then go on with us to Kosovo). This was why we got safety classes on carrying heavy things.

A bunch of us had handtrucks to help, but I didn’t see anyone with a dolly.

Maybe next time.
