Ohhh, I hope that awareness and use of email encryption is widespread enough that this comic works!
So I work with a lot of government computers (surprise, surprise) and I’ve also seen on some business computers that encryption of attachments is becoming fairly universal (or at least it seems that way– I don’t normally pay attention to this stuff). But being able to see attachments can depend on if that encryption is supported at your end.
My organizations like to run things through Microsoft 365, and of course they want to use things like Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive and all that stuff. I frequently forget that if you use Outlook email through the Microsoft 365 window, a lot of encryption doesn’t work any more —you have to use the actual standalone app.
I tend to get focused and forget that I’ve opened my Outlook from the Microsoft 365 suite, so I can’t see my email attachments sent to me and then there’s a little popup that warns me “S/MIME isn’t supported in this view”, and I stop and stare, wondering who is the damn S-Mime and why won’t he let me see my emails?
